Defending Your Rights, Protecting Your Freedom
Violent Crimes

If you are charged with a violent crime, time is of the essence. You need to get the best criminal defense attorney you can. Beck Law is a top Denver criminal defense attorney who fights for your freedom.
Violent crimes involve the use of force or the threat of force to cause injury or death to another person. It is important to note, however, that “injury” does not necessarily have to be physical. Violent crimes are normally punished according to the level of harm experienced by the victim.
A “Violent crime” includes other offenses, such as aggravated assault, robbery, sexual crimes, domestic violence, false imprisonment, and involuntary manslaughter or murder.
Penalties for violent crimes depend largely on the severity of the charges. Penalties are also based on the nature of the crime, the extent of the victim’s injuries, and victim characteristics.
However, some felonies are deemed “Crimes of violence” that carry enhanced or mandatory penalties if you commit, conspired to commit or attempted to commit any of the listed crimes:
- Any crime against an at-risk juvenile or at-risk adult
- Murder
- First or Second-Degree Assault
- Kidnapping
- Sexual assault
- Aggravated robbery
- First-degree arson
- First-degree burglary
- Escape
- Criminal extortion
- First or Second-degree unlawful termination of pregnancy
AND YOU
used a deadly weapon, OR killed or seriously injured someone.
Although Colorado “crimes of violence” have mandatory minimum sentences, judges can grant a lesser sentence in cases they consider:
- exceptional and
- involving unusual and extenuating circumstances.
You need a criminal defense lawyer on our side. One that aggressively represents you and provides you with a legitimate legal defense. It is too risky for you to do it on your own or hire an attorney with no or little experience.
Crime of Violence Penalties
Colorado COV Felony Class | Sentence (with exceptions) |
Class 2 felonies | 16 to 48 years in prison |
Class 3 felonies | 10 to 32 years in prison |
Class 4 felonies | 5 to 16 years in prison |
Class 5 felonies | 2.5 to 8 years in prison |
Class 6 felonies | 1.5 to 4 years in prison |
If you are eligible, the sentence modification may even include probation. However, this modification may not take effect until your 119th day of prison.
If you are convicted of multiple “crimes of violence” arising out of the same incident, you generally must serve your sentences consecutively rather than concurrently. This means you serve each sentence one after the other rather than at the same time.
